Java Night Goes Green at Alexander Mackenzie |
|
Alexander Mackenzie's Arts and Culture Council is hosting Java Night May 7th. Java Night is a candle lit night of food and entertainment in which friends, parents and relatives can watch students perform various artistic talents, including singing, reciting poems, playing in a band or dancing.
This year, the arts and culture council has joined with SPHERE, an environmental coucnil at the Richmond Hill school that is raising money for a project, namely the renovation of a small patio outside the cafeteria into a beautiful green space with plants and benches. Organizers hope to encourage students to eat outside and enjoy the outdoor enviroment by turning this patio into a more inviting place. The arts council will donate all proceeds from Java Night to the project.

School for the Arts comes to Alexander Mackenzie |
|
Director of Education Bill Hogarth said educators recognize the arts as an important medium for learning for a great many students. “The expansion of specialized secondary arts instruction across a wider range of our geographic area will ensure more students have greater access to arts program options,” he said.
Current art programs at Huron Heights SS, Newmarket, Unionville HS, Markham, and Westmount Collegiate, Vaughan, will be developed to include a standard array of visual and performing arts. The three existing campuses offering specialized arts instruction will be joined by a fourth program starting at Alexander Mackenzie HS, Richmond Hill, in September 2009.
