York Public Board to Expand Secondary School Arts Programming

The York Region District School Board has announced a new strategy for the delivery of specialized arts programming for public secondary school students throughout the Region. Over the next two years, specialized instruction in dance, drama, music and visual arts will be expanded to include a total of four high school locations; one in each of the north, east , west and central areas of the Region. Director of Education Bill Hogarth said educators recognize the arts as an important medium for learning for a great many students. “The expansion of specialized secondary arts instruction across a wider range of our geographic area will ensure more students have greater access to arts program options,” he said.

Current art programs at Huron Heights SS, Newmarket, Unionville HS, Markham, and Westmount Collegiate, Vaughan, will be developed to include a standard array of visual and performing arts. The three existing campuses offering specialized arts instruction will be joined by a fourth program starting at Alexander Mackenzie HS, Richmond Hill, in September 2009.
